Headaches
Hands-On Care for Headaches, Including Migraines
Osteopathic care in Decatur for tension headaches, migraines, and headaches that start in the neck.
What I look for
Tightness in your neck, jaw, and upper back; circulation and blood flow; and a nervous system in fight or flight can all contribute to headaches. When headaches become chronic, your body can become primed to keep sending pain signals to your brain.
You’ll be lying on the table in comfortable clothes. I use my hands to feel where your head, neck, and jaw are tight, and I often hold still while those areas soften. Many people notice their breathing slow and their jaw relax, which can help when headaches come with stress and poor sleep.
How I practice
Consent
Touch happens only with your consent, and you can pause or change anything at any time.
Comfort
Your comfort is our guide. Positioning and pace adjust to you.
Being believed
Your symptoms are real, and what you tell me about your experience matters.
Headaches I treat
- Tension headaches Pressure or tightness around your head, often with a tight neck and shoulders.
- Migraines Migraines that keep coming back, with or without aura. I work alongside your migraine plan and medications.
- Headaches from the neck (cervicogenic) Headaches that start in the neck, often on one side, and spread to the back of the head, the temple, or behind the eye.
- Headaches with EDS or dysautonomia Headaches are common with hypermobility and POTS. I take both into account. More about dysautonomia care
Working alongside your other care
Osteopathic manual medicine works alongside your other doctors and therapies, including physical therapy. It does not replace primary care, and you should have a primary care physician managing your overall health. You don’t need a diagnosis or a referral to come in.
Common questions
Is this kind of care right for me?
This is gentle, hands-on care, and it’s different from most medical visits. It’s a good fit if you’re curious about the process and comfortable with some uncertainty.
Each visit is exploratory. I use my hands to feel where things are tight and where they move easily, and I ask what you notice as we go. Part of the work is learning to notice what’s happening in yourself, like where you hold tension or what helps you settle. That awareness is a big part of what makes treatment work, and it builds over time.
I can’t tell you ahead of time how many visits you’ll need, and changes are often subtle at first. This isn’t something I do to you. We work on it together. Not sure it’s for you? Start with a free 15 minute call.
During treatment I often work quietly, because it helps both of us notice what’s changing. I check in as we go, and you can ask a question or pause at any time. At the end, I ask what you noticed. The focus is on your experience, not on what I find.
Can an osteopath help with headaches and migraines?
Often, yes. Tightness in your neck, jaw and upper back, and a nervous system in fight or flight, can all contribute to headaches. I work gently on those areas, and many people notice their jaw and breathing relax during treatment.
What kinds of headaches do you treat?
Tension headaches, migraines and cervicogenic headaches, which start in the neck. Many of my patients have more than one kind.
Will this replace my headache medication?
No. It works alongside the care you already have. Some people find they need less over time, and any change to medication is a decision for you and the doctor who prescribes it.
